The sandwich effect says that you need a stronger hand to stay in a pot where there are players to act behind you.

You don't know how many people will bet and how many will fold or if you'll call a re-raise and you basically don't know what your pot odds are.

This is why you need a stronger hand, to compensate for the uncertainty.
