If you want to host a poker game there's nothing more simple than that as long as you know the game, you have people to play with and you have money.

However, every respectable house or casino has a set of house rules.

If you are hosting the game in your own home all the players, including yourself, have to follow these rules. House rules may differ from house to house and from casino to casino and they also might be different for cash games and tournaments. It is important that you know the house rules of the place you are playing in and it is also important that you respect them. Remember that you don't have to play at that house/casino if you don't like the rules.

You can print your house rules and either hand them out to players or put them at your bulletin board.

Here is an example of house rules that you can either adopt for your own games or further improve:

  • Players are not allowed to smoke at the table
  • If, during hands, confusion appears the house has final word over it
  • In case any of the rules are broken the player will be removed from the game
  • Players caught cheating will be banned from the next 3 games. The chips they had when they cheated will be divided to the other players equally
  • Players cards must be in front of their chips
  • Only put on the table the sum you said you bet. If you put more you will be asked to take the difference back
  • Players must announce half an hour before leaving. Gentlemen don't win a big pot then leave
  • Each player's chips and cards are their own, no other player is allowed to touch them
  • Coaching other players is not allowed. It's every man for himself
  • All players must respect the poker etiquette
  • Rabbit hunting is not allowed
  • No chopping blinds
  • Cell phones must be turned off during the game
  • Only use English at the table
  • Each players larger denomination chips must be kept in front of the stack, this way everyone can see them.
  • Bringing firearms to the table is forbidden
  • The use of illegal substances is strictly forbidden
  • There is no rake
  • Players must bring their own food and drink
  • Players who spill their drinks will no longer be allowed to drink at the table
  • Players must not act out of turn
  • None of the players must say the possibilities on the lop until the hand is over
  • In showdowns both cards must be flipped
  • Dead button rule applies

Here is an example of cash game rules:

  • The host will handle all the buy–ins and payouts
  • Buy–ins must be multiple of 2$
  • Only cash are accepted to buy–in
  • Players must announce half an hour before leaving. Gentlemen don't win a big pot then leave

You now have an example of house rules. Good luck in creating your own and hosting poker games.
